Whiti Hereaka She holds a Masters in Creative Writing (Scriptwriting) from the International Institute of Modern Letters. She is the author of three novels: The Graphologist's Apprentice, Bugs, and Legacy. Hereaka, Whiti ( -) is a novelist, playwright, and screenwriter of T ūwharetoa and Te Arawa descent. She is also a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and currently works for the Ministry of Culture and Heritage. Hereaka completed a Masters in Creative Writing (Scriptwriting) at the International Institute of Modern. Whiti Hereaka has combined science fiction and World War I in her new YA title, Legacy. We're pleased to present an excerpt from Legacy (Huia), a new YA novel by Whiti Hereaka (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Te Arawa), the author of the multi award-winning Bugs (Huia). Seventeen-year-old Riki is worried about school and the future, but mostly about his girlfriend, Gemma, who has suddenly stopped seeing or texting him. Her books for young adults include the acclaimed novel Bugs, (Honour Award, Young Adult Fiction, New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, and Storylines Notable Book Award, Senior Fiction, ); and Legacy, a time-slip novel about the Māori Contingent in WWI, which won the Young Adult award at the NZ Book Awards for Children and Young People. Legacy is a brilliant blend of history (), and the present, with the audio tape transcripts pinning them together. Essentially a story about the Maori Battalion at Gallipoli, the use of a time-travel jump by a teen of this time makes it both current and historical at the same time.
